    UNDERSTANDING SIKKIM

Why Sikkim Feels Unlike Anywhere Else in India

Himachal Pradesh is one of India’s most beloved travel destinations, a mountainous state in northern India that draws millions of tourists every year with its dramatic landscapes, snow-covered peaks, ancient temples, lush green valleys, and adventure opportunities that are hard to match anywhere else in the country. From the world-famous Manali snow point and the apple orchards of Shimla to the backpacker trails of Kasol and the untouched high-altitude desert of Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh offers a completely different experience at every turn.

Whether you’re a solo traveler looking for Himalayan trekking trails, a couple seeking a romantic Manali honeymoon package, a family planning a Shimla hill station holiday, a group of friends chasing adventure in Kasol or Kheerganga, or a corporate team looking for a refreshing mountain retreat, Himachal Pradesh has something for every kind of traveler in every season. With its well-connected roads, diverse accommodation options ranging from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts, and a mix of spiritual, cultural, and adventure experiences, it remains one of the top holiday destinations in northern India year after year.

    PLANNING A SIKKIM TRIP

Sikkim Holiday Packages Built Around Permits, Altitude & Border Access

Sikkim trips come with a layer of planning that most other Indian destinations simply don’t require, specifically, the permits needed to access border-adjacent areas like Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, and parts of North Sikkim including Lachung and Yumthang Valley. Travelwingz handles this permit process directly as part of the package, since getting it wrong or leaving it too late is the single most common way a Sikkim trip goes sideways.

Beyond permits, our itineraries account for the altitude itself, building in acclimatization time before pushing travelers up to Nathula Pass or deeper into North Sikkim, rather than rushing straight from Gangtok to 14,000 feet on day one. Packages typically include stays in Gangtok as a base, permit-inclusive day trips to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass, a multi-day extension into Lachung and Yumthang Valley for those wanting to go further north, and private vehicle arrangements since the mountain roads here aren’t really suited to self-driving for most visitors. Our team also tracks road and weather conditions through the trip, since landslides and snow can close certain routes with little notice during parts of the year.

    SIKKIM, PLACE BY PLACE

The Stops That Shape a Sikkim Itinerary

Each major stop in Sikkim sits at a different altitude and offers a genuinely different kind of experience.

    Gangtok

Gangtok is Sikkim's capital and the natural base for most trips, offering monasteries, a relaxed MG Marg promenade, and the comforts of a proper city after the remoteness of higher altitudes. Most Sikkim itineraries start and end here.

    Yumthang Valley

Yumthang Valley, often called the Valley of Flowers of Sikkim, bursts into rhododendron blooms each spring across a wide alpine meadow ringed by snow peaks. It's reached via Lachung and is one of Sikkim's most photographed natural landscapes.

    Tsomgo Lake

Tsomgo Lake, also called Changu Lake, is a glacial lake sitting above 12,000 feet that often stays partially frozen well into spring. It's typically visited as a day trip from Gangtok and requires a permit arranged in advance.

    Nathula Pass

Nathula Pass marks an actual functioning border crossing into China along the historic Silk Route, sitting above 14,000 feet. Visiting requires a separate permit beyond the one needed for Tsomgo Lake, and altitude sickness is a real consideration here.

    Lachung

Lachung is a remote North Sikkim village that serves as the gateway to Yumthang Valley, set among apple orchards and mountain streams far from Gangtok's relative bustle. It typically requires an overnight stay due to the distance involved.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Permits, altitude, and accessibility tend to dominate the questions for a Sikkim trip, here’s what to know.

Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit to visit Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, and parts of North Sikkim like Lachung and Yumthang Valley, while foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit for the same regions, with some areas restricted entirely for non-Indian citizens. Travelwingz arranges these permits in advance as part of the booking process, since they typically require passport-size photos and ID copies submitted ahead of arrival.

Yes, it’s a genuine consideration given that Nathula Pass sits above 4,300 metres and Tsomgo Lake above 3,700 metres, both reached via a fairly rapid ascent from Gangtok’s much lower elevation. Mild symptoms like headaches or breathlessness are common, which is why itineraries typically build in acclimatization time in Gangtok before pushing to these higher points.

The flower bloom typically peaks between late March and early May, when rhododendrons and primulas carpet the valley floor in full color. Outside this window, particularly in winter, Yumthang still offers dramatic snow-covered scenery but without the flower displays that give it its nickname.

Nathula Pass closures happen fairly regularly due to weather conditions, heavy snowfall, or military and security reasons, sometimes with very little advance notice. It’s generally treated as a planned attempt rather than a guaranteed visit, and travelers heading to Sikkim specifically for Nathula should build some flexibility into their schedule.

A North Sikkim extension covering Lachung and Yumthang Valley usually adds 3 to 4 days to a Sikkim itinerary, accounting for the long drive in from Gangtok, an overnight stay in Lachung, and the trip up to Yumthang and back. Combined with Gangtok and Tsomgo Lake, a full Sikkim trip typically runs 6 to 7 days in total.
